He founded the company which developed into Weldwood of Canada, an integrated forest industry which pioneered in developing joint programmes with the Indians of British Columbia. He has also worked with international agencies advising on forestry and land management projects, helping to found the International Council for Research in Agro-forestry, heading missions on forestry and energy from biomass to developing countries, and serving as federal negotiator in Nishga Indian land claims.
