During the past 50 years, F. Richard Matthews has made an indelible contribution to arts and culture in Alberta. This retired lawyer and entrepreneur is perhaps best known for his unstinting support of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, which he helped found in the 1950s, and which he has served as both a benefactor and board member. He has nurtured countless other arts organizations, underwriting new opera productions and sponsoring everything from concert series and educational activities to building projects and equipment upgrades. He has also generously supported the University of Calgary, as well as numerous health care and social service organizations.
