Deployed to Sinai as part of Task Force El Gorah from July 2015 to July 2016, Chief Warrant Officer Merry demonstrated inspirational leadership and professional acumen under extreme conditions. As the sergeant major of the Multinational Force and Observers peacekeeping mission, he ensured battle discipline among non-commissioned members while fostering strong ties with his Middle Eastern counterparts. Notably, he provided guidance and essential support to soldiers from 12 contributing national forces during large-scale relocations, and maintained the safety and security of visiting dignitaries.

Chief Warrant Officer Merry was deployed to Baghdad from October 2018 to November 2019, as initial command senior enlisted leader of NATO Mission Iraq. He proved central to the development of a cohesive group dedicated to mission success, despite significant obstacles and challenges. An outstanding role model, he consistently demonstrated the critical importance of the non-commissioned officer corps to Iraqi and international counterparts alike. Chief Warrant Officer Merry’s leadership was essential to establishing a new and vital mission, and ensured Canadian credibility on the world stage.
