Peter J. Jowett, M.S.M., Peterborough, Ontario
Meritorious Service Medal (civil division)
On August 14, 1998, park warden Peter Jowett displayed outstanding professionalism when he participated in the rescue of a U.S. citizen who had fallen 35 metres while hiking at Glacier National Park, in Montana, U.S.A. Suspended from a helicopter by a sling rope and working under the pressure of the rapidly fading daylight, Mr. Jowett hovered at tree-top altitude until he could reach the severely injured man who lay on a two-metre-wide ledge. Mr. Jowett then used his skills and training to help secure the victim into a Bauman bag to be airlifted to safety.
