Cole Edward Mitchell, M.B.
Janetville, Ontario
On February 16, 2017, Cole Mitchell attempted to rescue two friends after their snowmobile fell through the ice on Lake Scugog, near View Lake, Ontario. On a late-night ride, the victims’ snowmobile hit open water 200 metres from shore and sank into the lake. Following behind on his own machine, Mr. Mitchell ran to the scene and fastened a makeshift rope by tying two jackets together. He then threw one end towards the victim closest to the edge of the ice and pulled him out of the water with the help of a bystander. Unable to locate the other victim in the darkness, he waited for emergency services to arrive. Sadly, the second victim did not survive.
