On November 4, 1999, 17-year-old Cory Rule rescued his disabled mother from a fiery death in Bentinck Township, near Chesley, Ontario. Returning home that evening, Cory saw flames and thick smoke pouring out of the house. Knowing his mother was in the back bedroom, he immediately rushed in through the front door, the only access. Crouching beneath the smoke, he reached the bedroom and groped around until he located his mother on the floor beside the bed. In spite of burns to his back and arms, he dragged her through the blinding smoke and exited the house, moments before it was completely engulfed in flames. Shortly after carrying his mother to safety, Cory collapsed and was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his burns and for severe smoke inhalation.
