During the night of October 11, 1997, Daniel Goulet rescued a man from a smoke-filled apartment in Montréal, Quebec. As soon as he noticed the smoke, Mr. Goulet rushed to the third floor of the building and crawled into the apartment in search of occupants, only to be forced back by dense smoke. Once back outside, Mr. Goulet heard a voice coming from the apartment. He once again braved the blinding smoke and groped around until he found a disoriented man, who refused to leave. Mr. Goulet grasped his hand, pulled him outside against his will and guided him down the fire escape.
