On October 17, 1994, Mr. Goodridge rescued a young boy who had been swept by a wave into Renews Harbour in Newfoundland. After the accident, the boy's friend ran to Mr. Goodridge's nearby residence for help. Mr. Goodridge raced to the rocky shore, grabbed two life jackets and dove into the rough waters. He swam nearly sixty-five metres through the waves to reach the boy and place a life jacket over his head. Meanwhile, another man, a non-swimmer who was trying to help, was also knocked into the water and found himself in difficulty. Mr. Goodridge, towing the boy, swam to the second man and kept him afloat until all three were taken aboard a small boat that had arrived to help.
