On Halloween of 1984, Mr. Murray was escorting his three sons and a neighbour's nine-year-old boy from house to house. At one, they were met by a man dressed as a mean-looking witch; the boy panicked and ran onto the roadway, into the path of a pick-up truck. Mr. Murray, instantly assessing the situation, sprinted forward to prevent the impending collision. He reached the child in time, and pushed him back. Although Mr. Murray dove for the side of the road to avoid being hit, the then-braking vehicle struck him a glancing blow above the knee. The child was unhurt.
