Medal of Bravery
Peter Kuystermans of Eastend, Saskatchewan, lost his life at 8 years of age in an effort to rescue his younger brother from the frigid waters of the Frenchman River near Eastend, on December 1, 1968. The two boys were playing on the frozen surface of the river when the ice suddenly gave way and the younger child fell into water beyond his depth. Another child playing nearby reported that Peter jumped into the water to help his brother and by threshing about was able to push him to safety, but he himself failed to reach the solid ice and disappeared below the surface. Later a local constable arrived on the scene, located Peter's body and applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but the boy could not be revived.
