On 2 April 1982, Steven Ludwig Model was helping construct a logging road through rock on a mountainside near Jervis Inlet. The three-man crew was working to clear an unstable overhang before removing nearby debris from an early-morning blast. Mr. Model's two co-workers had just primed the dynamite required when the cliff collapsed, crushing one and partially burying the other. Before the slide settled, Mr. Model jumped from his back hoe and removed the heavy rocks pinning his brother, well aware that another slide could occur at any moment. With the injured man safely away from the area, he returned to the still-unstable slide site, defused the dynamite and assisted in the recovery of his friend's body.
