Stanley Mitchell died of smoke inhalation after rescuing his niece and her two children from a fire in their home on 14 February 1978. The woman was awakened by the smell of smoke and called for help to her uncle who lived nearby. By the time he arrived, Mr. Mitchell found his niece unconscious and aroused her. They then rescued the two children from a bedroom, but as they were leaving the house Mr. Mitchell became separated from the group and was overcome by smoke. Firemen arrived moments later and rushed him to hospital, but he died the following day.
