David Meyers rescued his neighbour who was overcome by smoke when attempting to control a brush fire on 13 April 1976. Mr. Meyers was called to the scene by another local resident who had noticed the victim helpless amid the flames. The rescuer twice braved the heat and smoke before reaching the victim, who by then was prostrate on the ground. Grasping his neighbour under the arms, Mr. Meyers persisted despite the danger of asphyxiation and dragged the unconscious man safely away from the fire.
