Glenda Meshake, aged thirteen, saved four very young cousins from a fire which destroyed their home at Aroland, Ontario, on 19 November 1976. The fire was set when the children had tried to light a Coleman lamp and dropped a burning strip of paper on spilt naphtha. Seeing the flames spread rapidly, Glenda at once took one child from the top of the table and put her outside the house. Another followed her, then Glenda returned through the fire for a three-year-old sleeping in his mother's bed. Eventually Glenda had gathered all four children outside and wrapped them in a sleeping bag. Moments later police arrived and removed the children from the scene. The house was burnt to the ground.
