On the afternoon of 2 May 1980 Cory McCallum, then aged eight, rescued a little girl from a boating accident at Pinehouse Lake, Saskatchewan. Three children were paddling a canoe about thirty metres from shore when it suddenly overturned. They fell into icy water almost two metres deep. Cory witnessed the tragedy from afar. With complete disregard for his own safety, he seized a piece of plywood and a stick to steer himself towards the little girl, who was struggling to stay afloat. He removed her from danger on the makeshift raft, then turned back to assist the boy, but by that time the latter had gone under. The other girl reached shore on her own.
