Dawn May saved her neighbour's two-year-old daughter from a fire which destroyed their apartment on 8 May 1978. Mrs. May had heard the fire alarm and on her way out of the building aroused other tenants. Outside she encountered a woman whose daughter was trapped in her bedroom. Noting that no one else would go inside and at very grave risk Mrs. May entered the smoke-filled room through a window at basement level. She inched her way through the smoke, found the child in her crib, and with difficulty carried her to safety. Mrs. May applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Jennifer and the child was revived.
