Michael Maloney, M.B. (posthumous)
Medal of Bravery
On the afternoon of July 18, 1967, Michael Maloney, a 19-year-old university student was working alongside a colleague on the east pier of the Government dock at Bayfield, Ontario. In trying to clear a snagged line attached to a crane bucket the man was thrown from the dock into Lake Huron. Michael Maloney knowing that his fellow worker could not swim immediately jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue him. In the emergency, the crane operator ran to get them aid but when he returned, the two men had disappeared below the surface. Michael Maloney, clearly, lost his life in the attempt to save his mate.
