Medal of Bravery
Howard Hatton and Wylie Simmonds suffered serious burns while attempting to save the life of a man whose aeroplane had crashed near Craven on 10 June 1976. The men had seen the crash and raced to the scene. They found the victim half out of the cockpit, with his clothing on fire. With no concern for their own safety Messrs. Hatton and Simmonds grasped the pilot by the arms. Though, at the cost of injury to themselves, they strained to lift him out, they could not free him. A few moments later the wreckage was totally engulfed in flames.
