Early in the evening of 12 January 1982, Cpl. Mitchell Scott of Canadian Forces Base Downsview risked his life in an attempt to rescue a three-year-old boy, trapped in the basement of a burning house. Returning from an errand, Cpl. Scott saw fire progressing rapidly at the home of a fellow- member of the services. Told that the boy was still inside, he broke a window, lowered himself into the basement and crawled along the floor, inching his way through dense smoke. He returned to the window once to get a flashlight but went back and continued searching for the child despite the obvious danger. Cpl. Scott remained in the basement until the searing flames and the blistering heat forced him outside. Others present at the scene had to help him to safety. Sadly, the boy could not be saved.
