On the afternoon of 22 August 1983, the courageous and skilful efforts of thirteen-year-old Scout Kendall Isnor saved a teen-aged boy from certain drowning at Mill Falls in Kejimkujik National Park. The boy's father caught a fish and in the excitement the boy lost his footing and fell into the swirling waters at the bottom of the falls. Neither could swim, so the father summoned help while trying unsuccessfully with a fishing rod to prevent his son from being swept downstream. Kendall at once swam to the rescue, fighting cross-current in the cold river. On reaching the boy, he had to struggle to free himself from the grip of the drowning boy. Dragged under three times by the weight of the victim's water-filled, high rubber boots and the boy's frantic attempts to grab him, Kendall nevertheless persisted. In spite of near-exhaustion, he towed the teenager to shore.
