In the early evening of 7 December 1980, Bruce Humphrey arrived on the scene of an accident in which a car had burst into flames following a head-on collision. Without regard for his own life, Mr. Humphrey opened the driver's door on three separate occasions in an attempt to find any occupants. Then undaunted by dense and toxic smoke, he broke the window on the passenger's side and managed to pull a woman out of the car through the passenger window. Moments later the vehicle was completely engulfed by fire.
