Robert Haywood saved a young woman from drowning in Lake Ontario at Toronto, Ontario, on December 28, 1972. When seeing someone in distress in the freezing water, Mr. Haywood removed his jacket and swam to her aid. The victim was found in a semi-conscious state, several yards off shore. Although inflicted with severe numbness in his legs, the rescuer persisted in pushing and towing the lifeless body to within a few feet of the shoreline where he was assisted by another person. As a result of Mr. Haywood's prompt action and perseverance, the young woman was able to receive artificial respiration and was revived.
