In the afternoon of 9 June 1982, Freddy Grilli saved a man from a determined suicide attempt in the Rivière-des-Prairies. When alerted that the man had jumped off the railing of the bridge, Mr. Grilli hurried down to the shore. He dove in the water and swam a distance of seventy-five metres against the strong current, grabbing the man just as he disappeared below the surface. In spite of the cold water, which hampered his efforts, he struggled to keep the victim's head up. With the help of others Mr. Grilli succeeded in reaching safety.
