On June 6, 1991, Mr. Gorsky rescued two children from a burning house in Vancouver, British Columbia. At about one o'clock in the morning he was awakened by an explosion and saw a house across the street on fire. He immediately grabbed his fire extinguisher and, although lightly clad and barefoot, ran through the debris to the scene. As he approached, he realized his extinguisher would be of no use against the raging fire. Hearing a child's cries for help from an upstairs window, Mr. Gorsky quickly clambered up the side of the collapsed house, pulled the child out and brought him to safety. Told that another child was still inside, Mr. Gorsky returned and, without hesitation, entered the burning room. He located the youngster trapped underneath a wall and was able to dislodge her. Mr. Gorsky dove through the window with the girl only seconds before the room collapsed.
