Edward Goodman rescued a thirteen-year-old girl from a fire in Kelowna Senior Secondary School on 12 December 1979. The students had left the building when the alarm had sounded; but the girl, who suffered from cerebral palsy, had fallen in the corridor. There was an explosion, and when the school's shop teacher Edward Goodman opened the outside door into the corridor, he was met by a blast of heat and smoke. Asking a student to keep the door from slamming shut because of the pressure, he ran into the inferno, found the girl on the floor and carried her out. She was treated in hospital for severe burns.
