On the morning of 2 October 1981, Frederick Gaggioli witnessed an exchange of gunfire between an armed bank robber and a police officer who was attempting to apprehend him following a hold- up. The thief fled on Sherbrooke Street, stopped a taxi and threatened the driver at gunpoint. Moments later Mr. Gaggioli saw the suspect aim his revolver at the policeman trying to open the car door. Despite the obvious danger of gunfire, and fearing for the officer, he seized a construction warning flasher and hurled it through the rear window of the taxi. Hit on the right arm, the criminal dropped his weapon and the policeman succeeded in overpowering him.
