While driving home from teaching school on British Columbia's Pinchi Reserve on May 14, 1984, Gloria Duncan saw a man and his wife fighting in a ditch at the side of the road. Stopping her truck, she ran over to them, noticing that the woman was covered with blood and that the man, in a frenzy, was repeatedly stabbing her with a hunting knife. She attempted several times to take the knife away from him, but the attacker, a big man with a history of violent behaviour, shoved her out of the way. She was able to grab both of his arms and throw him over backwards, but he recovered and went on stabbing his wife. Miss Duncan then grabbed his knife hand, pulled his other arm back, and was able to push him off the woman. Kneeling on him, she told the victim to run away as fast as she could, then talked with him, trying to calm him down. He got up and walked away. At this point Miss Duncan drove her truck to where the woman was crawling down the road. Sending two students who had been travelling with her for help, she laid the victim on the ground and then, with the help of witnesses to the incident, placed her in her truck and drove to meet the ambulance. The victim recovered.
