On the morning of 6 October 1981, John Csatary saved a man from a fiery death following a five- vehicle pile-up on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Burlington. While motoring on the highway, Mr. Csatary witnessed the multi-vehicle collision in which a station wagon caught fire. He ran to the scene of the accident and found the semi-conscious driver pinned to his seat, surrounded by flames. He tried without success to open the door. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, in spite of the danger, Mr. Csatary stretched his head and shoulders inside and pulled the driver through the window just before the vehicle was engulfed. Mr. Csatary recovered from burns sustained to his right arm.
