Police Cst. Vernon Sokaluk saved a man from a fire in his home in Winnipeg on 12 December 1978. The man had fallen asleep on a sofa while smoking. On awakening he ran for the door but fell in the corridor. His wife, unable to drag him to safety, called the police. Cst. Sokaluk answered the call and on entering the house was obliged to go down on all fours to find the room through the thick smoke. With great difficulty he pulled the heavy man by the arms out of the house. The victim was revived after the arrival of an ambulance.
