At 9:45 p.m. on August 21, 1987, Mr. Maurice Fogerty came to the aid of a couple whose car had been involved in a head-on collision in Rawdon, Quebec. When he arrived on the scene the vehicle was on fire in the ditch and its occupants seemed to be unconscious. Unable to open the doors, Mr. Fogerty threw sand on the engine to try to bring the fire under control, but to no avail. Redoubling his efforts, he managed to open a rear door about fifteen centimetres, but was still unable to extricate the occupants. Meanwhile the flames continued to spread. Aware of the urgency of the situation, he used a rock to smash the rear window, helped the driver out of the inferno and carried him to safety. Once again he approached the burning car to help the other victim, a woman. Climbing inside the vehicle through the back window, he managed to pull her out of the car and carry her away from danger. In the meantime, police who had arrived at the scene were helping the occupants of the second vehicle. Without Mr. Fogerty's help, the victims would surely have died in the fire.
