On July 23, 1994, Mr. Forrest saved his uncle from drowning in the Severn River, at Washdale Falls, north of the town of Washago, Ontario. The uncle was trying to unsnag his fishing line when he was caught in the undertow and pulled into a whirpool. Mr. Forrest, who had been swimming nearby, screamed for help and dove into the pool. He tried to push his uncle up, out of the water, but the current separated them. He managed to grasp the drowning man once again and hold him above the water's surface. Once able to touch bottom, Mr. Forrest carried his uncle to shallow water, where bystanders offered their help.
