While out for a "wheel" in Moncton, New Brunswick on the evening of August 12, 1986, Maurice Martin, paralysed from the waist down, saved a quadriplegic from being hit by a train. As the men were crossing the railroad tracks, the victim's wheelchair became stuck in the track groove. At that moment the crossing lights began to flash and the bell started ringing at the approach of a train. Without hesitation, Mr. Martin, himself confined to a wheelchair, turned back, grabbed the handles of the victim's wheelchair and, by putting his weight on the back of the chair, was able to dislodge the front wheels and clear the chair from the tracks just as the train passed by.
