On the morning of August 6, 1987, Sandra Lee Hargrove rescued her nine-month old daughter, who was asleep in the basement den, from a burning house in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Mrs. Hargrove was mowing the lawn when she noticed smoke billowing from the house. Unable to enter through the back porch, nor break the basement window, she raced around to the front porch door, walked through the smoke-filled kitchen with flames dancing around her feet and stumbled down the basement stairs to the den, where she opened the window, passed the unharmed baby to her mother outside and then climbed out herself.
