Medal of Bravery
While on patrol in Hagersville, Ontario, early in the morning of May 3, 1986, Cst. Gordon McIntosh of the Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Police noticed smoke coming from a house. Upon learning that a disabled man was still inside, he made several attempts to enter the building but was repeatedly driven back by thick black some and flames. At this point Stanley Jackson, a firefighter, arrived alone and with no protective equipment. He immediately entered the house and was able to reach the stricken man, but was forced back by the smoke before he could save him. A fire emergency vehicle arrived and when Jack Esselment, one of the firefighters, learned that the man was still trapped inside he grabbed an airpark and, without taking the time to don the rest of his turnout gear, entered the burning house. Mr. Esselment was able to reach the victim, drag him out a side door and, with Mr. Jackson's help, pass him over the porch railing to others. Unfortunately, the man later succumbed to his injuries.
