While driving down Trafalgar Road in Milton, Ontario, early in the morning of May 12, 1986, Mr. Anthony Sakalauskas, an off-duty firefighter, saw flames shooting above the roof-line at the rear of a house. After ascertaining that the rear of the building was indeed completely ablaze, he entered by the front door. Seeing the figure of a man silhouetted against the flames in the hallway and obviously confused, he grabbed him and pushed him out the front door while discovering from him that his friend was asleep upstairs. Mr. Sakalauskas immediately turned and, despite the heavy smoke and darkness lit only by the flames and well aware of the danger involved, climbed the stairs. While feeling along the upstairs walls and calling to awaken the sleeping person, he grasped at the first movement he saw and connected with a man's arm. The two men found the stair railing, followed it down and were able to safely leave the building.
