Washing his car outside on October 11, 1986, in Oshawa, Ontario, Paul Myers noticed thick black smoke coming from a neighbour's house and immediately ran over to help. Met just outside the house by a woman carrying a baby, he was informed by her that her other child was still inside. The fire was already well in progress and several unsuccessful attempts had been made to rescue the child. However, disregarding his own safety, Mr. Myers covered his face and entered the house, only to be forced out by smoke and heat so intense a window had been blown out. The mother implored him to make another attempt, telling him the boy was upstairs. He re-entered, felt his way upstairs and, sweeping his arms in front, found the 3-year-old at the top of the stairs against a wall. He then carried the boy out to safety.
