Richard Ulliac, then aged sixteen, saved a man from drowning and attempted to rescue his cousin at Sandhill Lake, Alberta, on 25 July 1977. The young men had been driving several heads of cattle and were returning home by way of a channel near the lake, when their horses panicked. Richard's two companions were thrown into the water but neither could swim. Richard, who was back on shore, jumped in fully clad and had to subdue one victim before pulling him to shore. The rescuer then wasted no time in going back for the other, but no sooner had he entered the water than his cousin sank below the surface. Richard swam to where he had last seen him, but failed to find him and, because of exhaustion, was forced to give up the search.
