On May 8, 1996, Joseph Noseworthy rescued two men whose lobster boat had capsized in the cold waters of Savage Cove, Newfoundland. Witnessing the fishing boat tip over, Mr. Noseworthy and his father grabbed the first available boat and rushed to their rescue. When they reached the fishermen, one victim was clinging to one of the oars and the other had disappeared under the surface, weighed down by his fishing outfit. While his father pulled one man inside the boat, Mr. Noseworthy removed his jacket and jumped into four meters of cold sea water. He dove to the bottom and searched for the missing fisherman, but to no avail. As he started swimming to the surface for air, Mr. Noseworthy spotted the drowning victim and, despite the heavy weight of his rubber boots, swam to his side. He hauled the unconscious man back to the surface and towed him to the boat where he was revived.
