Medal of Bravery
Passing an Etobicoke, Ontario, house mid-afternoon on June 17, 1986, Jose Monteiro observed smoke coming from inside. Having asked a neighbour to alert the Fire Department, he ran to the rear of the building, joined on the way by two passing motorists, Daniel MacInnis and Neil McKinney. Hearing screams, the three entered the enclosed back porch where they found an elderly woman amidst the heavy smoke. Once they had helped her outside, she told them her husband was still in the house. Mr. Monteiro tried to enter by a side door but was prevented by the thick smoke. Grabbing some clothes from the line, he soaked them down with a garden hose and gave them to Messrs. MacInnis and McKinney who then entered through the kitchen door on their hands and knees, the wet clothes over their heads. They found the male occupant on the floor near the door and carried him out to safety. Moments later, the house was completely engulfed by flames.
