On July 14, 1994, 22-year-old Randall Neustaedter lost his life after rescuing a ten-year-old boy at Rock Lake, near Argyle, Manitoba. The boy was attempting to swim to shore from a floating dock when he experienced difficulties and called for help. Mr. Neustaedter, a non-swimmer, immediately jumped into the lake and was able to wade to the child. Struggling to keep above water, he managed to grab hold of the panicked boy and hand him to other rescuers. While they were taking the young victim to safety, Mr. Neustaedter slipped into deeper waters and drowned.
