On January 4, 1986, at approximately 3 a.m., Cst. Widdershoven responded to a call to assist officers at the scene of a murder in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. Shots were fired an a Cpl., who was tracking with his police dog, was shot in the leg. Cst. Widdershoven, fully aware of the danger, went into an exposed area to move his incapacitated colleague to safety. This required more than one journey and, as his colleague was badly injured, he had to remove his belt and use it as a tourniquet. At one point, he left the wounded man and ran to ask assistance of a Sgt. present at the scene. Together, they transported the man to a secure area to await the arrival of an ambulance. The criminal was later found behind a nearby bush, having committed suicide.
