Cst. Dwight Robinson is responsible, while on duty, for saving the life of a woman trapped by dense smoke in a burning building in Stettler, Alberta, on the morning of September 2, 1985. He arrived approximately 7 minutes ahead of the fire trucks and found the rear of the building in flames. Using the loudspeaker on his cruiser, he ascertained that only one woman was in the lodgings located above a toy store. This woman informed him that the only access was via an enclosed staircase and her apartment was at the end of a long corridor. He advised her to stand by the door of her apartment, smoke permitting, and that he would come and fetch her. He instructed two boys standing outside to keep watch and yell if the flames approached the stairs. Notwithstanding the smoke which was toxic because of burning plastic, Cst. Robinson climbed the stairs, located the woman and guided her to safety.
