On the afternoon of July 13, 1988, in Bras d'Or, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, William Serroul confronted a man armed with a loaded shotgun who was pursuing a female victim. The assailant had already shot the victim twice. Alerted by the screams of the wounded woman, Mr. Serroul ran through an open field to reach her. Mr. Serroul's approach caused the assailant to turn and flee, allowing Mr. Serroul to attend to the victim. Another shot was fired and Mr. Serroul turned to see the assailant fall to the ground. Mr. Serroul then hurried home to call for an ambulance.
