In the evening of December 6, 1987 Ronald Mowat saved a young man form drowning off Matheson Island in Lake Winnipeg. He watched from his house as a truck in which the victim was a passenger was driven onto the ice and then directly into a large hole. The driver bailed out of the vehicle before it entered the water while the victim managed to exit but came up beneath the ice. Mr. Mowat raced to the scene and finally saw the victim come to the surface, then go under again. Jumping into the cold water, Mr. Mowat pulled the man up and, with assistance from others, both were hauled from the lake.
