- Awarded on: June 26, 1989
- Invested on: December 11, 1989
Early in the evening of April 1, 1987, a fire broke out in the copper mine at Murdochville, Quebec. The smoke and heat soon made the situation dangerous for the miners underground. In the twenty- four hours which passed before help arrived, Mr. Roger Côté, an experienced miner, worked continuously. He organized searches to find missing miners, helped put out the fire, took various measures to ensure the survival of the men, made rounds to judge the seriousness of the situation, helped to clear the access ramp and took steps to make eventual rescue easier. Thanks to his leadership and courage, all the miners in that part of the mine came out alive.
