At approximately 4:00 a.m. on January 30, 1988, in Clearwater, Ontario, a vehicle struck a tree and started to burn. Mr. David James Martin, who lived nearby, arrived at the scene and with the help of a neighbour was able to pull the driver from the car. They noticed another man unconscious in the passenger seat. While his neighbour dragged the first victim to safety Mr. Martin ran to the passenger side of the vehicle. He reached in and grabbed the victim, but burned his hand on the smouldering clothing and momentarily retreated. As the flames continued to spread he made another attempt, grabbed the victim by the shoulder and pulled him free.
