Medal of Bravery
During the early evening of June 26, 1987, a man canoeing on a large pond at a campsite near Leamington, Ontario, was thrown into the water when the craft overturned. Hearing the man's wife screaming for help form the shore, Richard Charles Grant immediately ran from the park entrance booth to the nearby pond and entered the deep water to save him. Ignoring his heart condition, Earl Flewelling, himself a non-swimmer, followed him into the water. Mr. Flewelling soon realized that neither Mr. Grant nor the victim could swim and grabbed both of the flailing men who, in their panic, pulled him deep beneath the surface. Although he lost his grip on Mr. Grant during the struggle he was able to hold onto the man who had fallen out of the canoe. When he regained the surface, he was able to haul him to shore a short distance away. While he was doing so others took over the search for Mr. Grant, who, found a short time later, unfortunately could not be revived.
