On the afternoon of March 5, 1988, a man became trapped in his burning home in Drummondville, Quebec. A friend who had come to visit, seeing smoke through the kitchen window, was trying unsuccessfully to help him when Mr. Michel Céré, a tenant in the building, decided to intervene. He ventured into the kitchen, but dense smoke forced him to retreat. After determining the exact location of the victim's bedroom, he crawled into the smoke-filled kitchen with his coat covering his head and face and was able to see the victim's legs protruding from the bedroom doorway. When he reached the unconscious man Mr. Céré grabbed his legs and pulled him out onto the porch, thus, saving his life.
