On February 16, 1990, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Mr. Michael Jesse Nunn rescued a fellow employee from a burning shop. Mr. Nunn had been working in the automotive shop, removing the gas tank from the chassis of a truck, when he suddenly heard a whooping sound. The cab of the truck was afire. Mr. Nunn began yelling to warn the other workers while he ran to get a water hose and attempted to douse the flames. He had to abandon the effort because the fire was spreading too rapidly. Realizing someone was still in the upstairs office, Mr. Nunn then ran up the stairs through the blinding smoke. He grabbed the worker, who was attempting to descend, and pulled her down the stairs and out of the blazing building.
