On March 8, 1990, at Valleyfield College, Quebec, Johanne Soucy-Proulx took control of a dangerous situation by disarming an adult student wielding a gun and a switchblade. When he arrived in the classroom, the student brandished his weapons and threatened to shoot one of the female students once she entered the room. A few students tried unsuccessfully to convince him to put down his weapons. One frightened student headed for the staff room where she alerted Ms. Soucy-Proulx who then entered the classroom and began talking to the young man, thus allowing the others to escape. She finally convinced the student to surrender his weapons, thereby averting a possible tragedy.
